Geomarine has won a prestigious civil engineering award for work it carried out on the Hanois Lighthouse.
The Guernsey based company, which is part of the Garenne Group, took the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West award for the best project under £1m.
The Hanois Lighthouse project saw the repair and stabilisation of the boat landing steps at the lighthouse, in an extremely exposed offshore location, with difficult access in a tidal range of up to 10m. The team working on the project had to live and work in very challenging conditions. Geomarine worked with local consultant engineers, DLA, to design the repair work for the client, Trinity House.
Ian Gilmour, CEO of Geomarine, said: ‘Hanois Lighthouse is an iconic local landmark, steeped in history and presenting a challenging working environment. It utilised all of Geomarine’s expertise and was an extremely satisfying project. It really seemed to strike a chord with the judges against some stiff opposition from major UK contractors, and we are thrilled to have won this award, especially as there were a record number of entries in the category this year.’
ICE South West covers a large geographical region and represents more than 6,000 members. The awards ceremony, which was held at National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, celebrated outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity around the South West. The award was presented to the Geomarine team by Sir John Armitt CBE, president of the ICE.
Miranda Housden, ICE South West regional director, said: ‘We were delighted to celebrate the achievements of so many local projects at our awards ceremony. Collectively, the winning projects are a real showcase of what civil engineering is all about; they include a flood protection scheme, bridge maintenance, new highway, helipad, lighthouse boat landing, cycle route construction, dam, service station and even a marine lake. This is far from an exhaustive list of what civil engineering is all about, but it gives a very good idea of how much it impacts upon everybody’s daily lives.
I would like to offer my congratulations to all of the winning and highly commended projects; your work is a shining example of civil engineering at its best.’
