We are rather proud of Geomarine’s work in Sark recently. La Coupée is a narrow, rocky ridge that connects Little Sark with the main island of Sark. The crest of the ridge is occupied by a single-track road, the only access between the two parts of Sark. During an inspection by a Geomarine Senior Geologist in December 2024, at-risk areas of the rock face and supporting walls of La Coupée were identified. The Government of Sark was advised and commenced regular inspections. Repair work was planned for spring 2025. However, on January 14th, one of the areas deemed at highest risk partially collapsed. While the road itself was not damaged, there was a significant risk of further collapse, needing urgent rectification. The road was closed to traffic. Within two days our Technical Director, Martin Curd, visited and completed designs for emergency repairs. A flurry of pan-island activity followed, coordinated by Geomarine Guernsey, assisted by rope-access specialists from Geomarine Jersey. Flood lighting provided by Sark Fire Service illuminated the entire west side of the ridge, enabling the site team to work around the clock, completing the repairs before the arrival of Storm Éowyn. Total time from rockfall to reopening was ten days. The stabilisation consisted of layers of sprayed-concrete and reinforcement-mesh, retained with long steel soil-nails drilled into the soil and rock. The originally scheduled work will take place in the spring. It is an incredible testament to how the community of Sark and the larger Channel Islands pulled together to complete the repairs in record time. We hope to continue our work with the Government of Sark, providing ongoing monitoring and assessment of this vital link to Little Sark. This is an unusually long post for us, which reflects how we felt about the work. If you've read this far we have to assume you are interested in geology and/or engineering, so please get in touch.
