Having been involved from the outset, Geomarine, with its pan-island capacity and one-team approach, was ideally placed to carry out civils works on both islands under one contract, giving Guernsey Electricity confidence of service and delivery.
We were subcontracted to NKT, the cable supply and lay contractor for the 37.4km long cable which weighed 77kg per metre.
What would classically be a three to four year period for planning and installation was condensed to nine months due to the urgency. Works were challenged by the politics of closing beaches in season, the environmental sensitivity of the sites and the obvious logistical issues with landing and jointing such a cable to a tight schedule.
The cable lay was completed to the satisfaction of the supplier and end client. The team effort was acknowledged as exceptional by Guernsey Electricity and they are back to taking full load from France via Jersey.
