Geomarine were contracted to undertake works to replace 2 x 600mm double isolation butterfly valves located below sea level at the base of the desalination plant sea water intake shaft some 60ft below ground level. The works were undertaken, following comprehensive risk assessments and method statements, in what is considered to be one of the most hazardous and remote sites that Jersey Water operates from.
The works involved rope access teams employed to remove the aged valve spindles and associated guide rails and brackets before a specialist dive team could remove the existing valves and install new marine spec valves before the rope access teams returned to install new valve spindles and connect to automated actuators which allowed remote operation of the valves from the main desalination plant.
The contract had to be programmed in to suit both weather and tidal conditions and was completed on time and to budget with collaboration, teamwork and risk management between Jersey Water and Geomarine being paramount in the success of the project with Geomarine offering a professional engineering solution to an extremely difficult problem.
